Highly Customized World-Class Treatment

Studies† indicate that 46.6 million adults, or 1 in 5 American adults experience a mental illness in a given year.  While substance abuse continues to draw significant public attention, more than double the number of adults facing substance abuse issues are challenged with a mental health issue.  In our experience as a treatment center, we have found that mental illness and substance abuse problems are frequently co-occurring challenges.

Some of those suffering mental health issues may have experienced and sought treatment for substance abuse in prior years only to subsequently discover that substance abuse is not be their primary diagnosis.  Mental health issues are primary for them.  Some of these primary mental health clients have managed to maintain their sobriety but many others have not.  So, what do both types of clients do to effectively deal with and manage their mental health issues?

mental-health-treatment-malibuAt Beach House Treatment Centers, our medial and clinical teams are very experienced at dealing with both types of mental health clients.  For those who have relapsed on drugs and/or alcohol, detoxification and stabilization is the first step.  For those clients who have maintained their sobriety and whose primary issues are mental health, stabilization of their psychotropic medications may be the starting point.  For those not requiring stabilization and for those who have completed detoxification and stabilization, we provide a customized clinical care program to address their mental health issues.

†Recent figures published by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) indicate that 20.2 million adults are dealing with substance abuse issues each year.  Of those, 50.5% of those individuals or 10.2 million adults are also experiencing a co-occurring mental health disorder.

Diagnostic Assessment (DA)

Upon completion of detox and stabilization, each client undergoes a thorough Diagnostic Assessment.  The purpose of the assessment is to determine a complete set of precise diagnoses for all of the client’s medical, psychiatric, clinical and behavioral issues that have contributed to their admission for treatment.  The assessment team, led by our Executive Director includes:

  • Internal Medicine / Addiction Medicine Specialist – conducts an initial physical, gathers the client’s medical history and oversees the client’s detox and stabilization
  • Psychiatrist – conducts a psychiatric evaluation, a review if medication history and compiles the client’s psychiatric history to determine brain health and functioning. When indicated, the psychiatrist will also prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications during the client’s stay in treatment.
  • Other Specialists (as indicated) – during the course of the evaluation other medical, psychiatric and clinical issues may become apparent. In these cases, additional specialists may be consulted, and neuro-psych testing may be recommended.

Upon completion of the DA, the Executive Director determines the appropriate treatment team members for each client and works with them to develop a customized treatment plan.

Admission

At the time of admission, each client is given a thorough medical examination to identify any medical conditions or other health risks in addition to their addiction and/or co-occurring mental health issues.

Our admissions team compiles each client’s medical and prior mental health treatment histories for review by our team.  Blood and urine samples are drawn to provide indicators of current bodily functioning and to determine the exact levels of all substances currently in the client’s system.  The client’s detox and stabilization processes are overseen by one of our internists who specialize in addiction medicine.

Customized Mental Health Treatment Plans

At Beach House Treatment Centers, we believe that each client brings a unique life experience, pattern of substance use, mental health issue, process addictions and treatment history when they admit for treatment.  It is essential that the full array of each client’s underlying issues be factored into their diagnoses to achieve a successful treatment outcome.  To accomplish that we develop a highly customized treatment plan for each client to all the client’s issues and assist them in achieving their recovery goals.

We employ a psychodynamic approach to providing care.  Though group therapy sessions are an important component of our Concierge Program, given the underlying trauma most clients have experienced prior to treatment, we place a greater emphasis on individual therapy.  Individuals sessions provide the privacy and intimacy that often make is easier for clients to share with their therapist and make progress in treatment.  Concierge clients see their individual therapists (primary, family or specialty therapists) and their case managers multiple times each week.  Licensed therapists are at the facility seven days a week do deal with any client issues as they arise.   Efficient scheduling allows clients to go to a private health club daily, to do therapy sessions outdoors or on the beach and for clients to attend to their personal grooming preferences and shopping needs.

We utilize evidence-based treatment modalities that include:
  • Family Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Executive Coaching
  • Art / Music Therapy
  • Experiential Components
    • Surf / Water Therapies
    • Art & Music Therapy
    • Nutritional Counseling

Thorough aftercare planning and execution are essential if mental health clients want to achieve successful treatment outcomes.  For that reason, we begin aftercare planning immediately following admission to ensure that a comprehensive continuing care plan is in place prior to discharge.

Dietary Wellness Program

Our team of professional chefs serve gourmet and globally inspired meals daily. Our passion at Beach House is to address your wellness and recovery journey through every aspect of your treatment experience, including the food we offer to our residents. Our Dietary Wellness Program is focused on brain health and is designed to help heal and rejuvenate both the body and the brain during the detoxification and early recovery phase. At Beach House we focus on incorporating essential micronutrients, vitamin-rich foods, and the highest quality, locally sourced ingredients. We are committed to removing the toxic GMO ingredients found in the standard, American diet (wheat, corn, soy, etc.), while implementing a low-glycemic and healthy fat diet for increased brain health.

Our Dietary Wellness Program enhances recovery by focusing on brain health. Our menus are curated to provide an increase in Omega 3s by including fresh seafood, grass fed meat, and creatively incorporating nuts, seeds, and other Omega 3 rich foods. By increasing the intake of Omega 3s, we greatly reduce the inflammatory Omega 6 fat sources which have been shown to block the uptake of healthy Omega 3s. At Beach House we have chosen not to use soybean, vegetable, canola, and corn oils and instead incorporate the use of avocado, olive, and coconut oil in our cooking. In addition to balancing this Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio, our talented chefs work with a wide array of seasonal produce, serving unique vegetable dishes and fresh, beautiful salad options at every meal. This ensures that our diet provides an abundance of naturally sourced vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that are so crucial in the healing of our brains and bodies.

At Beach House we invite our residents to have a different relationship with the food they eat; through cooking classes with our chefs, to addressing individualized dietary needs, to nutrition consultations with Registered Dietitian. This way of eating and nurturing a healthy relationship with food is not only pleasurable for our residents but, has been clinically proven to restore balance in the body, decrease post-acute withdraws, and alleviate cravings. We work from a model which acknowledges the power of the food we eat in promoting internal healing, lowering stress, reducing depression and anxiety, and increasing joy.
