Valentine’s Day: Finding Love Within Yourself While in Recovery
Valentine’s Day is considered one of the most “romantic” holidays, and the pressure Americans place on themselves to find love can be brutal. Regrettably, many Americans assume that if they’re not paired up with a significant other by Valentine’s Day, that they’re missing out – that they’re not worthy of love – and that can spark bouts of anxiety and depression. What most people don’t know, however, is that there are many single people out there. According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2017, there were 110.6 million Americans – that’s 45.2% of the population – who described themselves as single. What does this mean? It means that Valentine’s Day is just a day – and there are many people who aren’t celebrating it.
Those in addiction recovery may feel compelled to join in on some form of Valentine’s Day festivities, and there’s a helpful perspective that can be taken to both improve self-care and relish in the holiday season: find love within yourself. It truly all begins with perspective, and there’s no better time than the present to start practicing self-love. The New York Daily News reminds us that every day is “Day 1” – and with Valentine’s Day being just another day, you don’t have to look at it as a day filled with expectations.

Anne Lewis, a psychologist and clinical addiction counselor at Indiana University Health, told the U.S. News in 2017, “The first year of sobriety is fraught with challenging issues.”
During this time, you need to practice some self-love. Try some of the following activities this Valentine’s Day:
1. Allow yourself to relax and watch a movie that you love.
2. Go for a walk and witness the beauty around you.
3. Get some massage therapy.
4. Practice yoga and meditate.
5. Read a book that fills your mind, body and spirit with all things good.
6. Engage in a hobby and teach yourself something new.
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be stressful, dreadful, or exhausting. Life is what you make of it – and you can view this day as a time to practice giving yourself love – because you deserve it.
